Medical Gas Testing, Installation & Maintenance

Medical piped gas systems in hospitals are essential for supplying piped oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air and vacuum to various parts of the hospital. These systems are usually highly monitored by various computerized alarm systems.
MedGas installs and maintains medical gas systems with annual gas testing. These medical gas systems normally consist of a bottle bank system or VIE (Vacuum Insulated Evaporator) which houses liquid gases with an automatic change over system from a “duty bank” to “stand-by bank” to ensure continuity of gas supply, or a duplex or triplex compressor or vacuum pumps in a plant room monitored by alarms connected to the building management system. MedGas installs and maintains systems which can be a combination of both bottle banks or gas plant and as part of the greater building management system, BMS.

Medical Gas Testing Equipment

Medical gases piped throughout the building pass through lockable valves and zone service units, ZSUs, or AVSUs, area valve service units, before being piped into the hospital wards, theatres and clinical areas. MedGas regularly tests these items, ensuring safety. The zone and valve service units are placed in the walls at the entrance to a ward or medical room and house the area alarm sensors and NIST fittings. These fittings ensure that only the appropriate gas probe can be connected to them. The service units are mounted in a place that is easy to access in an emergency. They have pull out panels to enable quick isolation of the valves and the system and a key lock mechanism for maintenance and annual medical gas testing purposes.

Medical Gas Supplies - Safety Alarms

As part of the gas pipe system maintenance, MedGas carries out annual gas testing of plant and area alarms. The area alarms are located in predetermined positions visible to staff. They may be connected to the nurse call system and the BMS (Building Management System) to alert staff in other locations. Alarms are tested to check they activate correctly and transmit to the BMS and nurse call system.

MedGas monitors and tests all automatic change over manifolds, valve operations, terminal units, and pendant operation. MedGas work closely with maintenance staff and clinical staff to ensure the smooth operation of medical gas systems and that safety to patents is never compromised.

Medical Gas Solutions

MedGas ensures there is always a back-up system in place. If any part of the plant were to fail, or gases were to run out, an alarm would sound and the bottle bank system or standby VIE (Vacuum Insulated Evaporator) would kick in. This ensures the guaranteed, safe, secure delivery of medical gases to patients. The system is monitored 24/7 with three levels of delivery system in place: one primary system and two back-up systems.

MedGas also regularly carries our medical gas testing: annual gas testing of medical gas flows and gas specific items. MedGas tests gas flows at all terminal outlets. Gas testing of gas specific functions is also carried out to ensure only the correct gas probes can be connected to specific gases.  Non-interchangeable screwed thread, NIST, a fitting on pipework that will only accept the correct corresponding fitting for that particular gas and housed in the service units, are regularly checked.

MedGas has strict record keeping systems in place and always has appropriate forms and permits for sign off. Pressure gas tests carried out by MedGas are witnessed by hospital engineers.
